On 2 December 2003 the government (the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party) and a majority of political parties in the Folketing (the Social Democrats, the Socialist People's Party, the Social Liberal Party and the Christian Democrats) agreed on a Danish agreement on the EU enlargement (the transitional scheme) for workers from the eight Eastern European EU countries.
The agreement was prolonged and revised on 5 April 2006. With the revision of the agreement Denmark continues to have a transitional scheme, but it will become easier to employ workers from the eight Eastern European EU countries. The transitional scheme runs until 1 May 2009, and the aim is gradually to phase out the scheme.
