Denmark is widely known for its many EU referenda. In fact Denmark has held six referenda since its accession to the EC in 1973. In four out of the six referenda Danes voted in favour of EU integration, while a majority of the electorate voted no to the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 and to Denmark's accession to the single European currency in 2000.

A seventh EU referendum on the Constitutional Treaty was scheduled to take place 27 September 2005. However, the Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, cancelled the referendum during the EU Summit in June 2005 as a consequence of the two no-votes in France and the Netherlands.
