According to Council Regulation No 1 of 6 October 1958, all languages of the Member States are ‘official languages’ and working languages of the EU institutions. The Regulation is amended with enlargements of the EU, so the number of official languages has gradually increased.
After the enlargement of 1 January 2007 there are 23 official languages in the EU:
